COVID19 cancelled the conference this year, but not the minigrants!

  Twenty teams received minigrants in June.

Second round deadline: October 15, 11:59 PM!

People who receive minigrants have a year to spend the funds after receiving the check.

Each project is carried out by a team of people who represent at least three organizations in their community. All projects use the Try This funding as seed money to leverage other funds, community contributions, and volunteers.

Applying for minigrants:

Here’s how you can apply for up to $3,000 for your healthy community project!

Because of COVID19, this year is different in so many ways. There will be two rounds of minigrants, one in June and one in October. The deadline for the first round is June 18 at 11:59.   

 

Here is the Word application.  You can download it and print it out.

And here is a Survey Monkey application (new). 

The Survey Monkey version makes it easy to submit, but, will not let you close out and save. You have to paste it all in at one sitting. So we recommend downloading the Word version, preparing your answers, then pasting them into the Survey Monkey.

There is also an online version of the Try This checklist (part of the application). 

For easiest submission, do the Word version first, then transfer answers to the online version.

 

The application form will ask you to supply 3 – 5 SMARTgoals for your project. If you aren’t sure what that is, here’s a helpful tutorial and link to a great SMARTgoals video.

A minigrant gives you much more than money …

* You get a Try This helper who will help you get past roadblocks and help your team brainstorm ways to use your Try This dollars to generate matching money and resources and volunteers.

More than 300 kids joined the POP Club (Power of Produce) at the Bridgeport Farmers Market last summer. Fun with veggies and fruit!

* You can get help from experts from the wide array of Try This partners who work with food and healthy activity projects.

*  You’ll build a healthy-community team.

* You’ll be eligible for a workshop to help your community start a multi-year healthy lifestyle plan, with your project as one step along the way.

*  You’ll gain skills as a community leader.

*  As your community team moves from project to project, you’ll become an active part of a statewide movement of West Virginians who arre determined to knock our state off the top of the worst health lists.

What’s a team?

A team is at least three like-minded people from your community who have agreed to work together on your project. It can be anybody. You just need to convince us that you have what you need to get the job done. More info below.

To be eligible for a minigrant, at least three members of your team must attend the Try This conference June 12-13, where they can get help with the application process. The registration fee is low ($100 early bird, then $125 .)   Since the conference is cancelled this year, this requirement is cancelled for the first round of minigrants, due June 18. 

What must we do to be eligible?

  • include people from at least three community organizations, schools, churches, businesses or groups, to ensure broad community support. No one-agency projects will be funded. (A group can be “teenagers.”)
  • propose projects that will last. No one-day events.
  • use the Try This checklist to review a range of healthy lifestyle priorities for your community, inventorying what’s already been done, prioritizing new work.
  • Identify long-term goals and pledge to set a good example with healthy food at your event

What is the Try This Checklist?

 

The Checklist helps you look at what’s already been done in your community and choose priority projects. You can download it to your computer and fill it out with your team.

The checklist does the most good if your group fills it out and discusses it together. It MUST be completed and submitted with the application. Transfer your answers to the online version for easy submissi

How can I get ideas and examples?

*  Come to the conference! You’ll go away with tons of ideas buzzing around in your head.

What are the reporting requirements?

Here are the PDF versions of the minigrant application / reporting forms. Take a look.  It’s not hard if you keep up your statistics as you go along.

Important!  You will not be able to save and return to your report if you do it on the Try This site. You also can’t edit the report once saved. So we recommend downloading a digital version of the mid-year and final report forms so you can work on them at your leisure.

Here are some model project ideas with detailed budget info:

 

Build a hightunnel greenhouse for a school or community use (two pages, complete with detailed materials list). You can do it for under $3,000!

Start a year-round community running/walking program for adults and kids.  $3,000 will get you well on your way. Contact Road Runner Clubs of America.

Start a Master Gardener program in your community!  WVU Extension can help you set up a program. People who are trained as master gardeners pledge to do community service, and they can help you do your project.  *  Page one      * Page two

Start a children’s raised-bed gardening program at school or in the community.  A minigrant gives you a great start!   * Page one

Children at Wood County’s Kanawha Elementary rock out every morning for a half hour before school.

Equip your school to keep kids more active before school and during class. Buy simple equipment – hula hoops, bouncy balls, push-up mats, jump ropes, etc. – that make it possible for your school to get kids moving before school every day, instead of just sitting around waiting for school to start!   * Page one    * Page two

  1. I am wondering if it is possible to submit for a mini grant despite the fact that 3 team members did not attend the Try This Conference? I know of several nonprofits that would like to submit, including mine, the Mon River Trails Conservancy. Unfortunately for the past two years you have held the conference on the weekend of National Trails Day (first Saturday in June) and this is our biggest fund-raising event of the year.

    I hope that you will consider changing the conference date because I would love to attend and suspect their are other water trail and rail-trail organizations that are busy with events on that day as well.

    • Ella, what you do is partner with some people who CAN come, for instance people from Extension or Peggy Pings or other people who are related to whatever you want to do. You do not have to be at the conference to be on the minigrant team. But you do need to have three people from your team at the conference. In other words, your team can be more than three people. But everyone needs to be contributing!

  4. I need help! I head our park (Brooke Hills park, Wellsburg, WV) committee for additional amenities that are primarily designed for wellness. I am seeking assistance to to help us w/ the expenses of purchasing necessary equipment & upgrading our facilities. This can come from donations, grants, etc.

    • The 2017 conference will be June 2-3. Registration will open here on Jan. 1!

    • Barbara, the 2017 conference is June 2-3 at West Virginia Wesleyan. Registration opens Jan. 1st! We’d love to have you there.

  6. Try This WV has been a great help in getting our project of creating a Multi-Purpose Park well on it’s way to becoming a real asset to our community. The Park upon it completion will encompass a large grassy area for Soft ball, soccer, volley ball, walking track, stage area for outdoor entainment, raised bed gardening and much more. Our goal is to supply an area for adults and children to get outdoors and become active while fellowshipping with one another. By working together on this project, we hope to develop long lasting relationships, of individuals working on heathier life styles, both phyicial and spritual.   9. I am working with two youth sports league and was wondering if there are going to be scholarship this year?

  10. My name is Tess Myers with the Generations saved Project. I am not yet a 501c3. can My County Commission receive the minigrant if I am approved?
